Vanuatu is a Pacific island country located in the South Pacific Ocean. The archipelago, which is of volcanic origin, is 1,090 miles east of northern Australia with a population of 272,459 people (2016 census). It consists of over 80 islands with about 810 miles between the most northern and southern islands.
Nearly 46% of the population of Vanuatu as a whole is evangelical (and 94% self-identify as Christian). But some islands - including Tanna, Anita, Santo, Vao, and others are home to pockets of traditional ethnic religion - including what is known as kastom (custom), taboos, and cargo cults. In these areas, Christian influence meets with strong resistance.
